The premier APAC MICE event concluded, though with a small turnover but on a note of Quality Over Quantity, welcoming 1,200 validated and qualified unique in-person and remote delegates, 363 Exhibitors from 135 companies and organizations from 27 new and returning countries/ territories Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Monaco, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and many more. Including the 414 MICE were happy with the business done with 387 in-person and remote buyers from 55 countries/ territories. The show welcomed 60% new buyers hailing from Albania, Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Georgia, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Qatar, Romania, South Korea, Uzbekistan. Over 60 international media participated in the coverage of bountiful event and availed networking opportunity.
First Hybrid Event Introduced New Initiatives and a Well-Rounded programme such as Hybrid Business Meets, 3D Virtual Exhibition and Scheduled Meetings with streaming broadcasts and remote participation 3 Day In-Person event and 9 Day Virtual Networking that extends exposure with on-demand viewing, and with exclusive virtual-only content.
A line-up of conference and seminar sessions was focused on emerging post-pandemic world, and the knowledge sessions designed to provide tangible learnings and innovative solutions for attendees in a post-pandemic world. Aside from business and knowledge components, this year’s programme featured a wide array of sponsor-backed engagements such as the opening ceremony and welcome reception, morning refreshments and Network Luncheons for Buyers and Media at Buyers Lounge.

In person events has an advantage of face-to-face meeting with business partners however virtual events has transformed into business events taking place in the future. ITCMA intends to continue to hold in-person events in Bangkok.

Khun Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya addressed the attendants of his excitement to attend a MICE trade show like IT&CMA-CTW, Bangkok, Thailand.
“Thailand is back in Business. Our arrival numbers are up. Large scale events just concluded successfully here. There are some large events due to take place next year. Thailand remains a trusted choice of destination. Now take a look at our business rebound.
- From October 2021 to June 2022 – 3 quarters of TCEB’s fiscal year – A total of 3.4 million MICE travelers, both overseas and domestic were recorded in Thailand with an estimated 16.34 million baht in revenue.
- By end of this September or end of our fiscal year, we expect to reach the target 6.13 million MICE travelers. An estimated revenue 28.40 billion baht, he said.
Khun Chiruit highlighted some of the major events with a large outcome of attendants like the Global Summit for Women (June 2022), Unicity Global Conference. “International events were not limited to Bangkok but our new MICE city as well. Songkhla in the South hosted PATA Destination Marketing Forum 2022 in August with over 300 international delegates. First face-to-face Destination Marketing Forum of PATA in 2 years. We appreciate PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) for giving the opportunity to a new MICE City in Thailand”, he added.
TCEB President introduced with some high profiled events taking place from now up until next year: Bangkok Art Biennale (October 2022 to February 2023) expect 1 million participants. APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit (18-19 November 2022) at QSNCC, Bangkok. Pattaya MICE City will host International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) 14-17 November 2022. Next year in 2023, Bangkok will host for the 3rd time 62nd Annual ICCA Congress.
“I would like to emphasize that TCEB has now assumed a role as a national bidder. We no more limit our role to event support or bid support but being a bidder itself. We aim to bid for mega or global events. The aim includes home grown events” – TCEB President clarified future goals.
Some of these home grown events includes:
- Horticulture Expo 2026 at Udon Thani – a new MICE City in N.E. Thailand.
- The First Thailand International Airshow 2027 at U-Tapao International Airport near Pattaya.
- A specialized Expo 2028 Phuket focused on health and wellbeing.
On sustainable MICE, khun Chiruit laid out clear policy on sustainability as one of the criteria for every event support. The Sustainability criteria is a response to the Thai government’s Bio-Circular Green new economic model or BCG because it is now a direction of every Industry. The government’s commitment to reducing annual greenhouse gas emission by 20-25 % by 2030 was announced during COP26 in Scotland last year.
He also emphasized on the power of local culture or localized experiences, which is the key to making events more meaningful. The rich culture and cultural diversity of Thailand is the strength on the soft side, which can be blended into business events, not found elsewhere. He concluded with announcement of new Thailand MICE brand for international market: “Thailand MICE – Meet the Magic”
Khun Pornsri Chotiwit attended instead of Mr. Mr. Korakot Chatasingha to welcome on behalf of Thai Airways. Thai marks 62nd Anniversary of operation. Opening Keynote: Onwards and Upwards
Moderated by Karen Yue, Group Editor, TTG Travel Trade Publishing, the knowledge session kicked off with the Opening Keynote titled:
“Onwards and Upwards”, presented by khun Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and on the panel: Max Boontawee Jantasuwan, President of SITE Thailand Chapterand Waikin Wong,Regional Director Asia Pacific, ICCA.
Khun Chiruit shared insights on critical ways the MICE industry have and should progress, emphasising on the continued value of “phygital” – a blend of physical and digital events; embedded wellness; and inclusive events that are universally accessible for a diverse audience. The distinguished keynote panel included Max Boontawee Jantasuwan, President of SITE Thailand Chapter; Waikin Wong, Regional Director Asia Pacific of ICCA; and moderated Karen Yue, Group Editor of TTG Travel Trade Publishing, explored the various changes the business events and travel industry had to face during the pandemic, and discussed the strategies moving forward into the future.

The panelists discussed insights on their approaches to responsible travel and trip ROI management and on the topic of “Vision of Value in Business Travel”. This session focused on the strategies the companies to manage their travel expenses and ensuring strong trip ROI” in a post-lockdown world with an increasing appetite and rising cost of travel.
The theme on Sustainability takes Centre-stage at the CTW APAC Conference Sessions in response to increasing conversations within the corporate travel community and beyond to spearhead initiatives towards collective change. “Walking the Sustainability Talk” was discussed by the panelists: Amarnath Lal Das, Vice President – India Travel, Meeting & Events of Accenture Solutions Pvt. Ltd., India; Barbara Ewals, Executive Director for Initiative for Global Resilience and Chooleng Goh, General Manager, The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel. To my (complicated) question (stating many examples): Does sustainability practically possible to achieve in fragile travel & tourism Industry? There was no satisfying answer!

Over 30 shortlisted buyers had the opportunity to hear about the Thailand’s latest MICE updates during the 20-minute Exhibition Walkabout by TCEB. Prizes were also given away at the end of the session.

Thailand Clinches 94 Leads
TCEB named Best Convention and Exhibition Bureau
(Source: TCEB, Bangkok) 13 October 2022: In a sign that the world is returning to Thailand for MICE, Thai exhibitors at the first in-person edition of IT&CMA in 2 years clinched 94 leads with an estimated 10,362 potential overseas attendees. Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) estimated that the leads will bring into Thailand 683 million baht in revenue.
IT&CMA 2022 adopted a hybrid format, taking place physically at Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld from 20-22 September and digitally for another additional 6 days. It attracted exhibitors from 9 destinations – Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Monaco, Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand. There were 1003 onsite participants and 224 online buyers.
This year TCEB-supported Thailand Pavilion housed a representative from Thailand Incentive and Convention Association (TICA) and a total of 34 exhibitors from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, Hua Hin and Khao Lak, consisting of 26 hotels, 4 convention centres and 4 DMCs. Meanwhile, the 3 MICE Cities in the northeastern region set up ISAN MICE booth, featuring suppliers from Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Nakhon Ratchasima. At the end of the physical event, Thai suppliers gained a total of 94 leads and 10,362 pax which is estimated to produce 683 million baht in revenue.
The leads are from India, Singapore, US and Europe, such as Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Belgium. The industries represented are pharmaceutical, IT, automotive and insurance.
TCEB President, Mr. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, said: “The fact that Thailand was able to secure 94 leads during IT&CMA this year shows that the world is very keen to return to Thailand for MICE. Thailand remains a strong choice for overseas clients. The 3 MICE Cities in the Northeast, on the other hand, are expected to attract around 60 groups by the end of next year. It is a proof that TCEB is on the right track in developing destinations in a different cultural and geographical region, offering more locations and generating revenue for more regions of the country”.

The responses of Thai exhibitors are positive with the prospects.

We met a total of 18 buyers, most of which are travel agents and DMCS from India. Others are from Germany and Singapore, representing various business sectors. The corporate buyers are mainly interested in meeting and incentive travel.”
Mr. Phanlop (Addy) Ritthrong, Managing Director, Eventage (Thailand), said: “Eventage participates in IT&CMA every year. It is a platform of opportunities to meet clients from all over the world and attract events to Thailand. We receive good responses from most of the clients. They are likely to bring business groups from many countries for our company. But most of them or 80% are from India. The others are from Asia Pacific.
