The hotel begun operation in the year 1983. I had first experienced the Royal Orchid Sheraton (ROS) on the bank of Chao Phraya River more than 20 years ago when I had attended a PATA travel event in Bangkok. And since then, I had several occasions to bed down at this well-placed hotel in the capital – one of my favorite abodes in Bangkok, seeing changes through the years as the hotel upgraded and noticing a variation in the interior, services and facilities during the stay with shifts in management.

I recall my pre-COVID visit with my room at the Club Floor with access to the Club Lounge – a generous serving of fruits and confectionary tray in my spacious room on arrival day.
On my recent visit, the ROS classic mahogany boat was temporary out of order, which otherwise transport the guests with ease, sailing time about 20 minutes from the pier at the exit of Saphan Thaksin BTS (sky-train station) to the hotel. With this service unavailable temporarily, I hop on and off several boats to arrive at the hotel using Icon Siam and RiverCity boat service.

My recent stay saw some pleasant changes including a display of painting in the common areas of the hotel with an aspiration to promote artwork of local artists.
After a quick check-in, I am showed to my room equipped with luxury trimmings including a 55-inch TV. The large window unfold the view of the impressive Icon Siam across the river – one of the largest shopping malls in Asia, with State-of-the Art food courts and shopping floors. Presently, the hotel offers a total of 726 rooms, each equipped with modern comfort and lifestyle features.

My host accompanied me to introduce some of the features of the hotel and area under renovation (the Riverside Grill steakhouse Restaurant and bar). We walk past the Lobby lounge bar-restaurant, which serves Afternoon Tea in a relaxed seating area. During my 3-day stay, I tried the other three restaurants: Georgio’s Italian, Feast and Thara Thong – authentic Thai restaurant in Bangkok with classical Thai dance performance.

On arrival day, I tried GEORGIO’S ITALIAN. Authentic Italian kitchen also has a varied vantage collection of Italian wine.

From the menu, I tried Baked Beef Lasagna in clay pot, Seafood Pizza and for desserts – what could be more Italian than the Tiramisu.

FEAST is the venue for buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. At breakfast, a selection of super food along with the typical breakfast menu including egg station, assorted jams, cereals and juices; I begin with fresh fruits following with a platter from salad bar and after a pause, tried small bites on the main course including Thai curry, fried rice, sausage and soup.

The next day, at 7 PM, I enter the doors of the THARA THONG ROYAL THAI CUISINE. Accompanied by a Japanese blogger, we are inspired by the ambiance with artistic touching and space at the restaurant with a traditional Thai style sitting on the floor.

The Menu comprised of traditional Thai cuisines, and we delighted into Pomelo Salad in pomelo shell; Tom Yam Khung with River prawns; Duck Red Curry with lychee, pineapple and grapes; Deep fried Sea Bass with Thai herbs; Spicy Seafood with mixed Thai herbs; Pineapple fried rice with prawns; Mianekam: Beetle leaf with condiments grated coconut, ginger, lime, dried shrimps, shallots, sweet savory tamarind sauce; Coconut ice-cream with peanuts and finishing it off with Young Coconut drink.

The classical Thai dance performance depicted tales from the Ramayana. Artists are attired the colors of days of yore.

The hotel facilities and services include 2 pools, spa and fitness center, hair saloon and shopping at Lobby level and 1st floor.

Om Fashion Custom Tailor and Thai Silk shop on the 1st Floor of the Hotel is run by dedicated master fashion designer: Om Dubey. He is committed to 100% customer satisfaction backed with Loyalty and on-time delivery. He believes in being focused at one shop instead of having many shops and therefore his repeat customers are high profile clientele including head of States. M:086-403046. Omfashion1411@gmail.com.

By the hotel entrance, meter-taxis are available or the concierge will be happy to call a taxi or even book a long-tail boat to explore life along the banks of Chao Phraya River. A minute walk from the hotel is the bus stop to hop on local city bus to discover Bangkok beyond the riverside.
